3-Step Charrette: A Framework for Teaching Students to Solve Complex Problems in a Real-World Environment
Management Teaching Review
The 3-Step Charrette problem-solving methodology turns the classroom into a consulting firm. It trains participants to solve complex, real-world problems cooperatively and systematically. Participants identify needed information and perform several research cycles in teams to gain knowledge to examine the root causes of a presented problem. Participants then re-form into different groups to find solutions, ultimately consolidating their chosen solutions into a plan of action. The jigsaw…
The jigsaw transposition from research teams to solving groups ensures that participants acquire needed expertise and properly characterize the problem before attempts to fashion solutions even begin. As participants follow the procedure, the instructor guides them using in-stream debriefing. Designed for use with a live client, this experiential exercise is useful for capstone, strategy, consulting, design thinking, and business architecture courses.

1. Design a schema for balancing and optimizing service and staffing across United's 150 international locations for the purposes of:
• Presenting a consistently good experience for United travelers.
• Reduce cost by efficiently placing the right resources in the right places.
2. "Solve United" as a whole, looking at United as professionals identifying key opportunities and challenges important to United's success.
The students searched for applicable academic literature, toured operations at O'Hare airport, analyzed a "mountain" of data, interviewed station managers and customers, and listened to Strategy's and Business Architecture's take on the problem.
The students worked through various usage scenarios, applied regression analysis and other techniques, and devised a high-level modeling tool United could use to spot and correct problem areas which, over time, would yield a robust operational design optimized around the customer experience.
The final presentation was attended by United's CIO, who spent an hour and a half polling the students about a very broad range of ideas and issues important to United. (The students were under NDAs.) -
